India – Myanmar Border Trade Committee, Initiative Body to the enhancement of Bilateral Trade

   The First Meeting of the India – Myanmar Border Trade Committee was held on 8th November, 2012 at Moreh, Manipur of India. The Co-chair Mr. Khin Maung Lay, Director General of the Department of Border Trade led the Myanmar Delegates and the other committee members: representatives from Customs Department, Myanma Economic Bank, Immigration and National Registration Department also engaged in that meeting. India Delegation was led by Mr. Siddharth, Joint Secretary from the Department of Commerce under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

At that meeting, the previous discussion matters of the Fourth India – Myanmar Joint Trade Committee related with border trade issues were reviewed by both sides and current status of border trade between India and Myanmar, outstanding issues on border trade, problem/obstacles in smooth flow of border trade were discussed in that meeting in a fruitful manner to find out the ways and means contributing to the enhancement of bilateral trade.

   Moreover, other related topics of proposed expansion of items under border trade; to issue of Food & Drug Administrative (FDA) certificate; to establish the regional sub-committee and to hold the main India – Myanmar Border Trade Committee meetings once in a year regularly were also discussed in a spirit of mutual understanding, friendship and cooperation.

This meeting is the fruitful outcome of the State Visit of His Excellency, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh emphasis on the establishing the Border Trade Committee Meeting aiming at setting up to implement the meetings between the border trade officials and business persons in Tamu-Moreh and Rhi-Zowkhathar.
